Quick answer

How can I change a photo background to white?

Upload the photo to a free background remover such as 123PhotoTool or ChangeBackground.com, let it remove the background, choose white and download a JPEG. ICA rejects photos with a replaced background, so do this only for non-ICA photos and take ICA photos against a real white wall.

If your photo was taken against a coloured or patterned wall, a free background remover can make the background plain white in a few seconds. That is fine for non-ICA photos such as student and concession cards. It is not fine for your passport, NRIC or pass: ICA rejects photos with a replaced background.

Not for ICA applications

ICA does not accept photos that have been altered or enhanced, including a replaced or painted background. For a passport, NRIC, visa, PR, LTVP or Student's Pass application, take a new photo against a real white wall. Our guide shows how to take a white background photo at home.

How to change a photo background to white with 123PhotoTool

  1. Upload your photo. Open 123PhotoTool Remove Background and click Upload Photo, or drag, drop or paste your photo onto the page.
  2. Wait for the background to be removed. The tool finds you and removes the background automatically, usually within 2 to 10 seconds.
  3. Choose a white background. Under Background, choose Color and click the white swatch. The default is a transparent background.
  4. Check the edges. Use the before-and-after slider to check your hair, ears and shoulders. Leave the Foreground adjustment sliders at 0 so your face is not changed.
  5. Download a JPEG. Set Format to JPEG (the default is a transparent PNG), raise the quality from 85% if you like, and click Download Image.
  6. Crop it to size. Open our photo cropper, choose your student or concession card size and download the finished photo.

The free version of 123PhotoTool needs no sign-up and adds no watermark. When we checked, it allowed 2 photos per hour on each device and accepted JPEG, PNG, WebP and HEIC files up to 20 MB.

Option 2: ChangeBackground.com

ChangeBackground.com is another free online tool that removes the background and lets you put a solid colour behind you.

  1. Upload your photo. Open ChangeBackground.com and click Upload Image.
  2. Let it remove the background. The background is removed automatically.
  3. Pick white. In the editor, choose Background, then Color, and select white.
  4. Download as JPG, then crop it to size with our photo cropper.

Check the result

Automatic tools are good but not perfect. Zoom in before you use the photo:

Do

  • Check hair, ears and shoulders for a clean, natural outline
  • Use pure white, not cream or light grey
  • Save as JPEG, or a PNG the cropper can fill with white
  • Compare the result with your original photo

Don't

  • Use an edited photo for an ICA application
  • Accept halos, coloured fringes or cut-off hair
  • Let a white top disappear into the background
  • Add beauty filters, smoothing or "enhance" effects

Better still: start with a white wall

A photo taken against a real white wall needs no editing and works for every Singapore photo, including ICA. See how to take a white background photo.
